Gynecomastia Surgery: The Only Way to Get Rid of Man Boobs

Gynecomastia Before and After by Dr. Emmanuel Asare, male breast reduction specialistGynecomastia is a medical condition suffered by men who have enlarged breast tissue. The excess male breast tissue forms a soft and sometimes sagging breast that resembles a woman’s and can cause severe embarrassment and shame.

There are many possible causes for the hormonal imbalances that lead to gynecomastia, including obesity, aging, prescription medications, and steroid usage.

While many creams and pills promise to cure gynecomastia, these solutions do not provide permanent results.

Some gynecomastia pills claim that they work for 99% of the men who use it. These products are usually made up of 100% natural ingredients and botanical extracts, and can sometimes also contain theobromine cacao, guggulsterones, green tea extracts, chromium, sclareolides and caffeine.

These products claim that the ingredients work together to easily reduce the fatty tissue that causes large mammary glands in the male chest and that results can be seen within six months.

Even though these products assert that they are virtually “magic in a bottle”, medical studies have not shown pills or creams to help at all with male breast reduction.

Why Pills Don’t Work

Many men want to believe that pills will offer a simple and affordable solution to reducing their breasts. But this isn’t the case at all. This is because the underlying problem is found deep within the body. The hormones that cause gynecomastia cannot be fixed with a simple pill.

Hormones are responsible for the sexual characteristics of men and women, including hair growth, and breast and muscle development. Too much estrogen in a male’s body can lead to the over-development of male boobs.

Pills will not be able to reverse the estrogen levels in the blood and are not powerful enough to absorb excess hormones. They will not cure gynecomastia.

Creams

Just like pills, creams will only work at a skin-deep level. Your body will absorb the contents of the cream, but the cream will not be able to fix the cause of why gynecomastia is occurring.

Gynecomastia Surgery

Stop spending money on creams, exercises, and pills that will not resolve your gynecomastia issues. Even though companies who make these pills promise to deliver fast and amazing results, they will not cure your man boobs.

In order to fully get rid of man boobs, surgery is required. The amazing and innovative team behind Dr. Emmanuel Asare at our Gynecomastia New York centers help change lives for the better by getting rid of man boobs once and for all.

Symptoms of Low T (Testosterone)

For men of any age, “low T” or low testosterone levels, can wreak havoc on the body and mind. From low sex drive, impotence, poor energy, and difficulty concentrating to depression, this hormone helps to regulate a man’s body in more ways than you may have originally thought.Fotolia_8397756_Subscription_Monthly_XXL

In cases where low T is thought to be present, the only way to confirm that the symptoms are caused by low testosterone is to have a blood test done. A specialist should be seen immediately, such as an endocrinologist, urologist, or internist.

These specialists have more experience in treating the symptoms of low T than do other types of doctors. They will also have the expertise needed to determine if something else is going on.

For men who have low T and don’t even know it (they aren’t experiencing any symptoms), there is no need for alarm. A slightly low level of testosterone may turn up in a blood test unexpectedly and the patient didn’t even know there was an issue.

A specialist will be able to determine whether testosterone levels are low enough to call for hormone supplementation or if it’s better to keep an eye on it every few months and wait to see if it resolves itself, remains the same, or gets worse.

Treatment Options for Low T

Testosterone replacement therapy is the only viable option for low T. Since hormones are chemical substances that flow through the bloodstream and affect the appropriate systems in the body, a synthetic form of the hormone can easily be introduced into the body through several means:

  1. Injections placed into the muscle for gradual release
  2. Implants placed under the skin (pellet form, slow release)
  3. Mouth patch (for timed absorption through the gum tissue)
  4. Skin patch (similar to a nicotine patch, testosterone is time released directly into the skin)
  5. Gel or foam (in packets or pumps for exact dosing, applied to the skin)

Men using testosterone replacement therapy have varying responses to treatment as far as mood levels. Some report a major improvement, while others say they don’t hardly notice a difference. Each person’s response is individual and treatment can be assessed and adjusted by the physician if needed.

Treatments for High E (Estrogen)

The opposite problem of low T, high E occurs when too much of the female hormone estrogen is flowing through the blood. The resulting symptoms can be very similar to the symptoms of low T, with the addition of enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia).

Raised estrogen levels can occur for a number of reasons, but mainly is caused by one of the following:

  1. Anabolic steroid use
  2. Drug abuse such as marijuana, heroin, speed, or the professional use of methadone for drug addiction treatment
  3. Some prescription medications such as antibiotics and those used for depression, anxiety, prostate enlargement, and liver or kidney conditions
  4. Alcohol abuse
  5. Age-related hormonal changes

Very rarely, a testicular tumor, kidney disease, or liver failure are reasons for high estrogen levels in a man’s body. If a person notices enlarged breasts or glands, a trip to the doctor is the very best first course of action.

When Gynecomastia Won’t Go Away

In some cases, patients wait in vain for 2-3 years or longer for their breasts to shrink down to their former size. For these patients, surgical correction of the extra breast tissue is the only permanent and complete remedy.

In the most advanced form of surgery available today, laser-assisted liposuction is used to melt away the extra fatty tissue. This form of liposuction destroys and removes fat cells so that a normal amount remain.

Glands cannot be removed with the liposuction method; only manual excision is possible. However, a discreetly placed incision is made around the areola so that it is virtually unnoticeable after surgery.

If you are dealing with the symptoms of gynecomastia, Dr. Emmanuel Asare can help. With a decade of experience in male breast reduction surgery and another decade in internal medicine, he is an expert in male-related breast and body health issues.

Facts About Revision Gynecomastia Surgery

Fotolia_43906086_Subscription_Monthly_XLAs a cosmetic physician, I see patients with a variety of issues and factors that make their particular case unique and individual. No two people are alike – and no two surgical procedures are either!

The other day, I had a patient come in after having received male breast reduction surgery from a prominent, local plastic surgeon in NYC. The surgeon and the patient will go unnamed, however, the situation is something all too common that I must make a comment on.

Crater Deformity and Revision Gynecomastia Surgery

This man presented with what is called a “crater deformity” in the breast. This deformity is apparent when a previous gynecomastia surgery has been done improperly. Generally, the issue at hand is too much glandular tissue has been removed from the breast. In some cases, the deformity can also occur when too much fatty tissue has been removed, leaving a deep depression in the fatty tissue.

This particular patient was not a candidate for revision surgery, which broke my heart. His situation was so dire that the breast appeared to have missing muscle tissue. In common (less severe) cases of a crater deformity, it is a feasible solution to remove fat from another part of the body using tumescent liposuction and then transferring that fat to the crater deformity. The fat provides a natural cushion to fill in the area so that a natural contour can be achieved.

Unfortunately, it was not a solution for this particular patient. It was my assessment that the previous surgeon had removed so much glandular tissue that actual muscle had been removed as well. The crater deformity was made worse when the patient’s breast was flexed. In these cases, a muscle transplant (a very risky procedure with spotty success) is the patient’s only option. Since I do not perform those types of procedures due to the low success rate, I had to turn this patient away.

How to Choose a Well-Qualified Male Breast Reduction Surgeon

I wanted to present this situation to my potential gynecomastia patients for one reason only: to encourage you to do your proper research before choosing a surgeon!

Choose a surgeon who:

  • Is Board Certified
  • Has many years of experience
  • Has many happy patients talking about him on unbiased websites (not on his own website)
  • Is a specialist in treating gynecomastia

If you stick with those basics, you’re more likely to get the results you are looking for. Give me a call today at 212.206.0023 or 631.499.1831 for a private consultation at no charge to discuss your case, your concerns, and what you hope to accomplish by having male breast reduction surgery.

I have two Gynecomastia New York offices in Long Island and New York City.

Is it Breast Cancer or Gynecomastia?

Is it male breast cancer or gynecomastia? Dr. Asare weighs in.

gynecomastia-informationFirst off, let me  say that breast cancer in men (MBC, or male breast cancer) is a very uncommon occurrence. Statistics stated by BreastCancer.org quote about 1 in 1,000 men will develop cancer in one or more breasts. The numbers for women are much high with 1 in 8 developing breast cancer during their lifetime.

The good news, aside from the fact that MBC is rare, is that it is very treatable if caught early. In this story by the Wausau Daily Herald, William (Joe) Clark was one of the unlucky men to develop breast cancer. The warning signs of breast cancer include a lump somewhere in the breast tissue or nipple, redness, puckering of the skin, discharge from the nipple, and soreness. For Joe, the only sign that something was amiss was some blood-tinged discharge from his nipple. His wife insisted that he see a doctor and he received his diagnosis.

Thankfully for Joe, the cancer was caught early and treatment options were available to him in order to be cancer free. But what about gynecomastia? Is there a set of signs that can determine whether a breast issue is cancer or gynecomastia? Yes and no.

There are similarities in breast cancer and gynecomastia in that there can be a lumpy appearance to the nipple with gynecomastia as the breast glands grow underneath the nipple. This can cause puffiness, firmness in the nipple and a visible “lump” or nodule of tissue in the nipple area. Another similarity is tenderness of the breast or nipple. If this occurs, again, please see a doctor right away for a physical exam.

There are dissimilarities in breast cancer and gynecomastia in that discharge from the nipple is NOT a sign of gynecomastia and should be checked out right away by a qualified doctor. Another major difference between cancer and gyno is that the breast tissue in men with gynecomastia will get larger in many cases, taking on a more female-like appearance (which is why they are often referred to as “man boobs”). With breast cancer, the fatty tissue of the breasts is not altered in size or volume.

The bottom line is that you need to address your health issues right away, no matter how much trouble it is to get out to the doctor’s office or however embarrassed you might be regarding where the issue is occurring on your body. Take care of yourself and stay healthy!

Feel free to visit our Gynecomastia New York centers in Long Island or NYC for your free consultation if you’re noticing any of these alarming symptoms in your breasts.

Mens Tips for Looking Younger

gynecomastia-open-door2Looking and feeling youthful isn’t just for women. Men want to age gracefully too and take care of their looks. If you’re a guy who wants to find the fountain of youth, it may be much closer than you think.

Taking Care of Your Body

It’s a fact: the more you take care of yourself the younger you will appear. Exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight to keep your middle section and face slender is a great way to erase years from your appearance. Weight training a couple times a week will also build muscle definition, keep your metabolism roaring, and give you an opportunity to give people tickets to the gun show!

Nourishing yourself from the inside out is also extremely important when it comes to looking and feeling youthful. Eat foods with plenty of vitamins and minerals and keep fats and sugars to a minimum. Your best bet is to stick to lean proteins and plenty of fresh produce.

Keeping Up with Your Appearance

Not only does staying healthy keep you looking and feeling younger, but you can stay that way by being aware of what you look like.

If you’re balding, accept it. Don’t do a comb-over or wear a toupee. Either shave your head or invest in hair transplants.

Glasses can add years to your appearance. Ditch the grandpa frames for contact lenses instead or laser eye surgery.

Keep your smile looking brilliant by taking care of your teeth and keeping them pearly white. Visit your dentist regularly, floss and brush twice a day, avoid coffee and red wine, and have your teeth whitened once a year.

Do You Have Man Boobs?

If you suffer from man-boobs, that can take a toll on your self-esteem. Gynecomastia surgery can help you get rid of male breasts permanently and give you a slender, sexier appearance that will make you feel better and have you looking much more youthful.

As the saying goes, “clothes make the man”. Bright colors can make you appear slimmer and younger. Go for orange, blues or any other color that will compliment your skin tone on top and some dark denim or chinos on bottom.

Our Practice

At our NYC gynecomastia and gynecomastia New York offices, Dr. Asare and Dr. Diktaban are committed to making their male patients feel as comfortable as possible. They offer the latest in laser-assisted gynecomastia surgery to eliminate scarring and keep down time both to a minimum. They will also work closely with you to fit the costs of the surgery into your budget.

Are Gynecomastia Supplements the Magic Pill?

If you do a search on Google for “natural gynecomastia treatment”, you’ll be immediately bombarded with ads, links, blogs, and websites that promote “all natural gynecomastia cures”. Unfortunately, this types of supplements are ineffective for most cases of male breast enlargement, no matter how long people take them. But why? Don’t they have before and after pictures to prove that their pills work?

Why Their Before and After Pictures Don’t Tell the Whole Story

In the cases where the pill companies take before and after pictures that best represent what their pills supposedly can do, the truth is that the men featured in those pictures were never suffering from true gynecomastia. Rather, they suffered from a bad case of pseudogynecomastia. In this “false” gynecomastia, fatty tissue accumulates in the male breast as a result of the person being overweight.

If you look very carefully at the before/after pictures on the pill maker’s website, you’ll quickly discover that the before pictures show overweight men and the after pictures show a much slimmer version afterward. It’s not that the pills helped them to lose weight; it’s that they went on a diet and exercise regimen while taking the pills and that activity led to a reduction of their breasts.

Why Pills Can’t Cure True Gynecomastia

True gynecomastia is caused by a hormonal imbalance which leads to enlarged fatty tissue and or breast glands. Just as you cannot take a pill to reduce the size of your buttocks, arms, or legs, you cannot take a “magic pill” that will reduce the size of your breasts. Especially when it comes to glandular tissue growth, the tissue that is made up of dense, glandular cells, cannot simply be whisked away by swallowing a pill. Once the tissue is present, it must be removed with gynecomastia surgery.

How to Prevent Man Boobs from Coming Back After Gynecomastia Surgery

In order to stop breasts from growing again after surgical treatment, it is imperative that patients do the following:

  1. Have your blood tested prior to surgical treatment to see if an underlying disease is present that may be causing the gynecomastia.
  2. Test your blood for testosterone and estrogen hormone levels and make sure your primary care physician has you on a plan to get your levels balanced out.
  3. Exercise at least 3 times a week to keep excess body fat at bay. Estrogen is stored in body fat; higher body fat levels are associated with a higher incidence of estrogen hormone imbalance in men.
  4. Eat well so that you can maintain a normal body weight.
  5. Incorporate weight lifting into your workout routine to keep muscles toned and to tighten the skin on the chest.

Causes of Gynecomastia

What Causes GynecomastiaFotolia_47825549_Subscription_Monthly_XXL

Many of our patients come to us having done some research about “man boobs” as they are very affectionately called. Unfortunately, there’s nothing charming about a condition like this that causes the male breasts to enlarge and take on a more female-like appearance.

But what causes this to happen to some men while others go unscathed their entire lives? The answer is that several different causes and factors go into whether or not a man develops gynecomastia. Here are the top 3 causes.

Hormones

Yes, hormones are the number one reason for man boobs to develop. This is because hormones play a direct role in a variety of functions in the body, including breast growth. In gynecomastia, men have too much estrogen in their body which causes the uber-growth of male breast tissue.

This type of growth can be fatty tissue and or breast glands. Either way, men don’t want it! To get rid of man boobs for good, a full hormone panel (blood tests) need to be done to find out the extent of the hormone imbalance, to find out of any other condition exists (such as endocrine or liver disease), and to see if supplemental male hormone needs to be given to bring things back into balance.

In most cases of gyno, the patient is over 50 and has had it for several years (sometimes decades, depending upon what age the patient saw it). Sometimes it starts in the teen years and never goes away. Either way, the main result is a pair of breasts that look less than manly. Sometimes, the nipple can protrude and enlarge, causing irregularly-shaped areolas that are much too large.

Steroids

Anabolic steroids are often times what brings in our bodybuilding patients to see us. These muscle-building substances cause the male breast tissue to develop because it converts to estrogen byproducts in the blood once it is metabolized. This is bad news for competitors and amateur bodybuilders alike. Unfortunately, the condition will not resolve on its own if breast glands have already grown.

In some cases where that has not occurred, the fatty tissue of the breast may shrink down to normal size again once the steroids are discontinued. Dr. Asare specializes in scarless fatty tissue removal and virtually scarless breast gland removal. This allows his bodybuilder patients to recover in about 3 days and not have to worry about their secret getting out.

Illicit and Prescription Drugs

Some prescription medications cause the breast tissue to develop. For some of these patients, switching medication is a possibility. Always ask your primary care doctor to give you a blood test to see why the breasts are developing and to be sure that it is the prescription medication that is causing the issue. If you are taking medications for your liver, prostate, HIV/AIDS, or hypothyroidism (just to name a few), it may be your medication that is causing the problem.

Marijuana, methadone (used for the treatment of drug addiction), alcoholic beverages, heroin, and amphetamines all can cause male breast tissue to grow. Men who have taken any of these substances and are experiencing breast growth should:

  • Stop taking the substance (with methadone treatment, get your doctor’s approval first before discontinuing)
  • Wait about 6 months to see if the breast tissue reduces on its own
  • If it doesn’t go away, see your doctor to get a blood test to see if your hormone levels are out of balance

Treatment is Laser-Assisted, Fast, and Scarless

Dr. Asare specializes in getting patients rid of their man boobs for good with very little to no downtime. The laser allows for miniscule blood loss, little bruising, about 3 days’ downtime, and a lower cost due to it being done with local anesthesia. If you are looking to treat your gynecomastia, the only way to get rid of man boobs is to have surgery. It is a permanent and complete resolution to gynecomastia.

Call Dr. Asare today at 212.206.0023 or 631.499.1831 for your free consultation. You may also visit our main website dedicated to gynecomastia at http://GynecomastiaNewYork.net.
